Know About Asexuality – A Type of Sexual Orientation

Some people feel sexual attraction to strangers while others may not feel comfortable unless they share a strong emotional bone with the person they associate themselves with. These behaviors are often understood and identified with a term called ‘Sexual Identity’ of a person.

What is Sexual Identity?

‘Sexual identity’ is a term how one thinks of oneself with whom one is romantically or sexually attracted. Sexual identity is also referred to as sexual orientation identity. Sexual orientation identity more precisely defines when people identify or dis-identify with a sexual orientation or choose not to identify with a sexual orientation. It is about who you’re attracted to and want to have relationships with.

Several forms of sexual identities exist. Some of them may share similarities too. Asexuality lies at one end of the entire spectrum of sexual behaviors.

Asexuality

Asexuality is the lack of sexual attraction to others. Sometimes, these people show low or absent interest in or desire for sexual activity. Research on asexuality on humans and other species shows that asexual behavior does not develop due to any physical imbalance. It may be caused by chemical and/or hormonal imbalance in a person.

People who show asexual behavior may experience romantic attraction toward others, but they do not feel any urge to act sexually. According to reports, an estimated 1% of the population is asexual. These people may be attracted to the same sex or other sexes. They are sometimes known as ace.

What Does It Mean to Be Asexual?

Feelings experienced by asexual people:

• They prefer getting married
• They fall in love
• They experience arousal and excitement
• They experience orgasms
• They frequent masturbation
• They also have children
• They desire a romantic relationship with someone
• They want to touch, hold or cuddle someone
• They are also attracted to other base don how they look

While some asexual people may experience all these feelings, but others may experiences them in specific circumstances only. For example, a person who is demisexual (which may be considered under the asexual umbrella) experiences sexual attraction only with people whom they have a deep emotional connection.

Do Asexual People Have a Libido or Sexual Desire?

Asexual people have a libido and are desirous of sex but it without any sexual attraction. This means asexual people want sex, and experience arousal and sexual pleasure from sex, but they don’t find someone appealing to have sex with or want to have sex with. Even without having attracted toward someone or not finding someone whom they are attracted to for sex, these people may still have a libido and have sex and masturbate.

Reasons of Why Asexual People Want Sex Even Without Sexual Attraction

There are many reasons why asexual people still have libido and are desirous of sex:

• To have children
• To satisfy their sexual desire or libido
• To experience pleasure physically
• To show affection
• To make love
• To get involved in activities such as touching, cuddling, etc
• To satisfy their partner’s needs

Causes of Asexuality: Is There a Medical Reason For It?

There’s no underlying cause of asexuality. It’s just the way a person is. Asexuality is not genetic in nature nor is the result of some trauma or injury. It is not caused something that can be controlled. It’s assumed that asexual people will feel sexual attraction when they meet the right person, which they don’t.

Can You Manage or Treat Asexuality?

Asexuality cannot be cured like a disorder or a medical problem. There is no treatment for asexuality.

Asexuality is completely valid, and there are many perfectly healthy people who identify themselves as asexual. Some people think of it as a sexual orientation, others consider it as a general sexual identity. If you are psychologically worried or disturbed about you being asexual, you should speak to your doctor about it.
